Freelance work can be thought of as a "contract" position of sorts... you usually aren't hired as an "employee", but rather simply hired to do a specific job or task. A variety of freelance jobs are available for bid on the internet. Basically, you browse through the available jobs, and if you see one for which you're qualified, you can "bid" on it, ie. state how much you'd be willing to do the job for. The person or company doing the hiring will choose a winning bid from amongst all those submitted.
